Everything you need to know about Plastic!

August 25, 10am

Ann has been researching Plastic; the health and environmental impacts of it's rampant use, and viable alternatives for the significant role plastic now plays in our society.  She's coming to share what she's been learning  with us: DON'T MISS OUT!

Recycling Changes in Brief:

There are several reasons why we have adopted new sorting practices at our community recycling hub.  As you may already know, the plastics and their associated numbers are all reprocessed differently, as well as the different types of paper products and metal.  With the appropriate equipment now on site we can decrease the volume of loads by compressing each type of material into bales.  Some of the materials are valuable resources that have the potential for revenue.  However, materials must be sorted thoroughly and properly for our system to receive income for these resources.   Revenue from our 'former waste' is integral to offsetting the cost of the system.

You can help reduce (or at least keep down) the operational costs associated with increased sorting by:

~ learning to recognize the different categories

~ taking the time to presort your recycling at home

~ bringing it to the site during open hours on Wednesday and Saturday.

Kudos to Frankels & friends...

for investigating and then exhaustively extinguishing a smouldering campfire on Ragged Islet today.  I would like to remind everyone to report issues such as this to the Coastal Fire Centre - Cobble Hill Base at 1-250-743-1304 even though you may have extinguished the fire.  They track these "near-misses" too.  They need eyes on the non-resident islands, and as we boat around our backyard, please keep vigilant and report all abandoned smouldering campfires etc.  They have a helicopter sitting on the pad at Cobble Hill for just this sort of response. In the Ragged Islet case they didn't need to go and check it out because the Frankels & Friends did such a great bucketing job.

To report wildfires on other islands: 1-800-663-5555 or *5555 from a cellular phone

But if you can't remember that, call 911 and explain where you are and what you see.

Cinderella Lost a Shoe
While swimming on the beach at Foster Point our daughter copied Cinderella and lost her shoe. We are hoping to find it again. So if you see a white croc (size 2) with a grey edge around the bottom floating in the water or at the beach please call us at 250-246-3847 Thank you, The Kempe's

FOUND! Lost black wallet
(on road between Telegraph Marina & Jollity Farm)
I dropped a small black wallet/purse while out walking the dog this morning.  The outside plastic has Noel's business card with my name on the back.  It contains my lip gloss, comb, kleenex, doggie bag & Bailey's little water dish and about $30.  The wallet is very useful to me and I'd be happy to just get it back.  Whoever found it is welcome to the money and perhaps could put it in the drop box at the mailboxes.
